MARTINSBURG Family and friends gathered at the 20th annual Brain Games tournament that was held Sunday at the James Rumsey Technical Institute.

The event was sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle.

LVEPs mission is to empower adults in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties to reach their full potential as individuals, parents, workers and citizens, through confidential and free literacy tutoring by trained volunteers.

Judy Malone, coordinator of the event, was very excited in leading the brain games for the eighth year.

I truly enjoy helping literacy volunteers in the Eastern Panhandle. We are here to play of course, but this is also a fundraiser for literacy volunteers to help teach adults how to read, Malone said.

Raffle tickets were sold, and prizes were available for all players at the end of brain games.

We pretty much have a door prize for everyone, Malone said.

Brain games also had a special guest, Bob Fleenor judge and quiz master to help host this year.

He is a Martinsburg native, and five-time Jeopardy winner, Malone said.

There was also a book exchange available for the participants to enjoy, encouraging more reading within the community.

I have been on the board now for five years. My favorite thing is the book exchange. People bring books to donate, and they buy what they want to buy, said Megan Garland, a member of the LVEP board of directors. Its a really good way to exchange books.
